James
Case:
James A. Case was born August 25,1880, and married Mary I. Thompson on October 20,1915. It
was a double wedding as James' brother, Talmage, married Mary's sister, Nellie, on the
same day. The brides' father, the Reverend George W. Thompson, officiated at the wedding.
James and Mary lived at Eldridge in Laclede
County where they homesteaded eighty acres. Wanting the best education possible for their
children, the couple gave the land on which a school for black children was built. One of
their sons, George E., was a member of the last class to graduate from the "Case
School" in 1936.
Times were hard and James and Mary
struggled to make a living. They depended on wild game for the supper table, but seldom
could afford ammunition for their gun. George trained two of their dogs to tree a
squirrel, wait for him to climb the tree to scare it out, chase down the running squirrel
and hold it until George got there.
During the influenza epidemic of 1918-1919,
James and Mary lost two daughters, Ollie and Phyllis. James never came down with influenza
and went around helping neighbors who were too ill and weak to do their farm chores. James
was at his happiest when he was doing favors for others.
Three children of James and Mary grew to
adulthood. James Case, Jr. married Maud Jarret and Leta May Case married Samuel Burk and
had five children. George E. Case married Fredonia Nolan on May 7, 1941, and had four
children.

William
Case:
William Case, Ed and Martha's second son, was educated in the home by a part-time teacher
hired by the Board of Directors of the Decatuiville School to teach him and his brothers
and sisters. Wanting to learn, William worked hard and diligently, receiving the
equivalent of an eighth grade education. His beautiful handwriting is still remembered
today. William married Cordia Kenoly and they had four children. Cordia died as the result
of complications at the birth of her son, Owen, at the age of twenty-nine on July 22,
1916. In August of 1920, Lena McDowell of Depew, Oklahoma became William's second wife. A
minister, William served as pastor of several churches, one of which was the Mt. Horeab
Church west of Decaturville, a mixed congregation of mostly white members. In 1938, he was
living at Fayette, Missouri.
William was described by his daughter, Mrs.
Eulah Richmond, as a mild mannered man who taught his children to respect their elders and
to behave according to high standards. The children were reared in a solid, Christian
family and all became respected members of their communities. Determined that his children
would receive a good education, he sent his daughter, Beulah, to live with relatives at
Lebanon so that she could attend the school there for black students and he sent Eulah to
relatives in Fulton so she could benefit from the black school located there. Later, Eulah
and her husband would continue this tradition of making education a high priority by
living in Fulton while their children were in school and moving to the farm when school
was in recess for the summer.
